Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi has been fined a staggering €450,000 after accepting a criminal (penalty) order in Germany for illegal possession of weapons.
According to the public prosecutor’s office in Hagen, the prohibited items discovered included a brass knuckle (knuckleduster) and a taser. These items are strictly regulated under German weapons law.
Adeyemi claims that the weapons arrived in what he described as a “mystery box” he ordered online at the beginning of 2024. According to him, the package remained unopened and “by chance” ended up at a police station.
In a public statement, Adeyemi expressed “deep regret” for his actions, admitting he acted “out of carelessness.” He emphasized that he understands his responsibility as a public figure and role model, and promised to avoid making such mistakes in the future.
Borussia Dortmund confirmed they are handling the issue internally and have spoken with Adeyemi about the seriousness of the case. The DFB (German Football Association) also acknowledged the situation, and Sporting Director Rudi Völler stated that while they must be critical, they also want to support the young player.
Former German international Christoph Kramer reacted to the fine by saying that while possession of weapons is serious, the headline was somewhat overblown: “I thought he had a rocket launcher in the basement or something.” He also stressed that owning dangerous items is unacceptable, but that context matters.
This incident is a major reputational setback for the young Borussia Dortmund forward. Fortunately, he avoided jail time. Moreover, size of the fine and the public scrutiny could impact his image, sponsorships, and relationship with the club. However, his willingness to publicly apologize and to fulfill social duties may help him regain trust.
